The situation in the contract vegetable growing sector remains tense. The Bundesfachgruppe Gemüsebau (BfG) im Zentralverband Gartenbau e. V. (ZVG) has written a letter to the Federal Association of the Fruit, Vegetable and Potato Processing Industry (BOGK) calling for prompt negotiation talks.

All efficiency improvements and savings opportunities in the area of cultivation of processed vegetables have been exhausted, the letter states. Cost increases in recent years, for example those regarding wages, technology or due to the Corona pandemic, had largely been borne by the producers. For the upcoming season, the availability of seasonal labor, fertilizers or crop protection products is also not assured, it said.

According to the BfG, a clear signal to producers of processed vegetables is needed for the 2022 crop. Otherwise, a reduction in cultivation areas and therefore in the available processing volume is to be feared, it said.
