Asociafruit confirmed that the early new potato planting campaign has ended with a similar area to the one planted in 2021. Asociafruit’s Potato Sector has recently met to analyze the evolution of the current planting campaign. Based on the seed import data, they were able to verify nearly 10,500 hectares in the early areas of Cartagena and Western Andalusia were sown, according to official data from both autonomous communities.
The sector is very concerned and uncertain about the consequences of the current political and economic context. Like the whole rural sector, the potato sector has been affected by the consequences of the widespread rise in prices of all the inputs necessary for production, handling, and transport, and can be harmed by the possible effects and indirect consequences that the current war in Ukraine can have on the market and the marketing campaign.
The diversion of production from competing countries – such as Egypt, the usual supplier of the Russian market – to the European market due to the devaluation of the ruble could have disastrous consequences on the marketing of the new potato in the EU markets, one of its main destinations.
Spain’s V New Potato Congress
Asociafruit will hold Spain’s V New Potato Congress on April 28 in Seville to analyze the situation of the sector and promote the consumption of Spain’s new potato. This Congress will be co-organized with FEPEX and has the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development of the Government of Andalusia. This year’s event will focus on ‘The sustainability of potato cultivation in the face of new regulatory and market requirements and it is expected to attract professionals from the sector from all the production areas of Spain.
Once the Congress ends, there will be an event to promote the new potato in Nao Victoria, where the symbolic peeling of the first potato of the campaign will take place, with the participation of chef Daniel del Toro, a well-known participant of the Master Chef program.
Asociafruit- the Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables of Andalusia – brings together 75% of the companies producing and marketing potatoes in Andalusia, accounting for more than 90% of the shipments of potatoes from the Andalusian community to EU and non-EU countries.
