Pumpkin is the third product that generates the highest volume of business for Vicente Peris, after its flagship melon and watermelon products.

The company has produced and marketed pumpkins since 2000, a period of time in which it reinforced its commitment to this product directing its efforts towards traditional varieties that have notably better organoleptic qualities. Currently, the traditional pumpkin varieties account for nearly 60% of Vicente Peris’ marketing volume.

These varieties have experienced the greatest growth both in terms of production and sales. In 2021 they produced 885,000 kilos, nearly 90% of which has been marketed so far. Production was 10% higher than in 2020, and so far sales have been 6% higher than in the previous year, as there still is a percentage of fruit that will enter the market this year.

The biggest rebound was led by the Roteña pumpkin, which quintupled the figures it achieved in 2020. Approximately half of the production has been transferred to the Free Range division, where these pumpkins are roasted and served in ready-to-eat portions.

The traditional Peanut and Carruecano varieties also experienced a notable increase, the latter increased by 13% over 2020. Both the Peanut and the Carruecano varieties have been marketed in different formats in the I, IV, and V range.

In 2021, organic pumpkin sales, which Peris only sells in the IV range, increased by 20% in volume over the previous year.

Research and improvement of traditional varieties
Vicente Peris has been producing and marketing hybrid and traditional pumpkin varieties for more than 20 years. The percentage of traditional varieties marketed has been increasing year after year until it currently exceeds the commercialization of hybrid varieties.

To work with traditional varieties Peris has had to implement research and innovation processes associated with the recovery of seeds, the selection of the highest quality seeds, their correct conservation, and their reintroduction into the cultivation cycle. In addition, the company conducts germination tests, which are carried out under controlled temperature conditions that allow the company to have a 96% germination success rate of all the selected seeds.
