Zero-residue Gentilina lettuce is already available for commerce – a new frontier for sustainable vegetables at Fellini Patrizio. “We have always been concerned about environmental impact, and zero-residue production goes precisely in this direction,” explains co-owner Emile Fellini.

Leo Group from Latina is a partner of the project, as it is the supplier of the lettuce grown with such little inputs. “Zero-residue lettuce will be available until spring, also in the Trocadero and Canasta types. The cultivation technique was developed after various tests and our zero-residue production is certified by CCPB,” add Deborah Frani and Fabio Grilli from the Quality department at Fellini P.

Fellini dedicated a new graphic design to the zero residue line, with a packaging that enhances the produce. “The production specification is strict and the varieties that are part of it are those tolerant and resistant to the main diseases.”

As for the commercial situation, “the bad weather in southern Italy penalized almost all crops and the produce is lacking. While there was an abundance of fennel up until 20 years ago, the produce is now lacking and prices are on the up. Some lettuce types are over €2/kg, tomatoes have reached €1.80-2/kg and fennel is at €1.50/kg.”

Usually there are lots of vegetables available in December, but this year it’s the opposite. “The high temperatures hastened production, then the prolonged rain favored the onset of diseases, so now we have a ‘gap’ for many products,” concludes Fellini.
