BelOrta and Aldi Launch the Season, Supporting Local Causes
FreshPlaza reports on the official commencement of the Belgian cherry season at BelOrta, where grower Benny Herbots delivered the first cherries purchased by Aldi for €5,000. BelOrta doubled this amount, directing a €10,000 donation to VZW Vincentius Limburg, dedicated to aiding underprivileged communities. Glenn Sebregts of BelOrta highlighted the brief availability of cherries, urging consumers to savor them while they last, akin to asparagus.
A Season of Challenges and Promise
Despite weather challenges impacting cultivation, Benny Herbots expressed optimism about the season’s quality, noting adjustments made to optimize plot selection for cherries. Kris Jans from BelOrta anticipated a harvest of approximately 3 million kilos from 160 growers, emphasizing robust quality despite weather-related setbacks. The use of protective covers safeguarded yields from adverse conditions like frost and excessive rain, ensuring ample supply despite initial delays.
Market Dynamics and Export Opportunities
Kris Jans underscored Belgium’s strategic position in supplying cherries to local and international markets, including France, the Netherlands, and Spain. Despite competition from countries like Greece, Turkey, and Moldova, Belgian cherries are distinguished by superior quality, bolstering their appeal among consumers and retailers alike.
Commitment to Local and Sustainability
Aldi’s Category Manager for Fruits & Vegetables, Maksim Van Herck, emphasized the supermarket chain’s commitment to sourcing locally and supporting community initiatives. The partnership with BelOrta and VZW Vincentius Limburg reflects Aldi’s strategy to meet rising consumer demand for fresh, sustainable produce while contributing to social welfare initiatives.
Looking Ahead: Pear Harvest Prospects
Addressing concerns over the pear harvest, Kris Jans reassured stakeholders about the ongoing challenges with pseudomonas bacteria, highlighting efforts to manage and mitigate impacts through strategic agricultural practices. Despite challenges, expectations remain optimistic for a viable pear harvest season.
