Advantages and Future Prospects
Inagro vzw, in collaboration with REO Auction, embarked on a pioneering journey from 2015 to 2021 to explore hydroponic cultivation of leeks using the Deep Float Technique (DFT) system. This innovative approach marks a significant leap forward in agricultural technology, promising numerous benefits over traditional methods.
The experimental study conducted by Inagro vzw and REO Auction unveiled compelling advantages of cultivating leeks on floating carriers. One of the standout features of this system is its potential for extensive mechanisation and automation. By leveraging advanced technologies, such as automated nutrient delivery and climate control, farmers can optimize their operations, reducing labor costs and enhancing efficiency.
Moreover, the environmental sustainability of hydroponic leek cultivation cannot be overstated. Compared to conventional farming, which often requires significant water and land resources, the DFT system demonstrates a lower environmental impact. It minimizes water usage through recirculation systems and eliminates soil degradation, thereby promoting long-term ecological balance.
The productivity gains are another highlight of this innovative approach. The study revealed that hydroponically grown leeks on floating carriers achieve higher yields per unit area. This increased productivity not only boosts profitability for farmers but also contributes to meeting the rising demand for fresh, high-quality produce in local and global markets.
The culmination of this endeavor was marked on Tuesday, 18th June, when the Boudry family from Kemmel delivered the inaugural batch of leeks grown on floating carriers to the REO Auction. Characterized by excellent quality and a significantly higher proportion of white, these leeks underscored the success of the project’s initial phase.
Looking ahead, REO Auction and Inagro are committed to scaling up this innovative cultivation system in the months to come. The continuous refinement and expansion of hydroponic leek production hold promise for transforming the vegetable farming landscape, offering sustainable solutions amidst evolving agricultural challenges.
