According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the average retail price of cabbage in Japan dropped by 15% to ¥193 per kilogram during the week of June 17th (from June 17th to 19th). This decline follows improved weather conditions and increased harvests after setbacks due to cold weather in March and heavy rains affecting Chiba Prefecture, a major cabbage producer.
In Chiba Prefecture, delayed growth and reduced yields earlier in the season contributed to the initial price hike. However, favorable weather conditions since June have led to increased shipments, thereby driving prices down. Additionally, lettuce prices decreased by 8% to ¥349 per kilogram, supported by steady shipments from Nagano Prefecture.
The fluctuations in cabbage and lettuce prices underscore the significant influence of weather patterns and regional harvest conditions on vegetable prices in Japan.
