Strategic Planning and Market Trends for Peruvian Asparagus in the Upcoming Season
The Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association (PAIA), representing over 90% of fresh asparagus imported into the United States, is preparing for an anticipated peak season from Peru. Priscilla Lleras, Executive Director of PAIA, emphasizes the importance of proactive planning and strategic marketing to succeed in today’s competitive marketplace. “In today’s marketplace, asparagus trade can only prevail through forethought and strategic planning,” Lleras asserts. “Experience and information are foundational key essentials to persevering in today’s economy.”
For the October to December 2024 season, PAIA importers are optimistic about improved volumes of Peruvian asparagus. Carlos Solf, Co-Chairman of PAIA and a representative of Southern Specialties, highlights that retailers should use this opportunity to implement promotional programs that can boost per capita consumption of asparagus. Although promotions can increase store-level revenue, Solf emphasizes that educating consumers on the benefits of asparagus will foster long-term industry growth.
The association is also forecasting favorable weather conditions for the 2024/2025 asparagus season. The previous year’s production and import volumes from Peru and Mexico were significantly impacted by weather-related issues, including the El Niño phenomenon. “After last year’s El Niño, ‘perfect storm’ that impacted production and logistics in Peru, we are certainly looking forward to steady supply and growth in volume by the end of this year,” Lleras notes.
PortMiami plays a critical role in the U.S. asparagus supply chain, handling a substantial volume of fruits and vegetables. In fiscal year 2023, fruits and vegetables emerged as the top commodity group at PortMiami, surpassing apparel. Peru is a key trading partner for the port, being the 7th largest overall and 4th in Latin America. Asparagus is a major component of these imports, representing 75% of Peru’s fruit and vegetable shipments to the port and over 45% of perishable imports, according to Eric Olafson, Director of Global Trade & Business Development at PortMiami.
With food price inflation stabilizing, consumers are increasingly looking for budget-friendly options that also offer nutritional benefits. Craig Rolandelli of Jacob Malcom & Burtt (JMB) emphasizes the value of consistent asparagus availability and cross-merchandising strategies. “When retailers continue to shelve large displays of asparagus 365 days a year, offering cross-merchandising options and varying SKUs, they are not only assisting in increasing demand for asparagus but optimizing their revenue, providing their consumers with meal solutions and increasing sales potential year-round,” Rolandelli advises.
PAIA continues to support the U.S. asparagus market by ensuring a steady supply of fresh produce throughout the year, leveraging strategic planning and market insights to navigate the dynamic food industry landscape.
