Challenges and Opportunities for Celeriac Growers as Supply Tightens
According to FreshPlaza, the growers’ association Fossa Eugenia has recently introduced the new crop of celeriac, signaling a shift in the market dynamics for this vegetable. Berden Agro BV, a key member of Fossa Eugenia, specializes in celeriac and has been actively involved in this transition.
Last week in Venlo, the final tubers from the previous storage were processed, making way for the new crop. This changeover comes at a time when the market is experiencing a tight supply. Luc Berden of Berden Agro BV noted that the availability of stored tubers is nearly exhausted, and the start of the new cultivation has been delayed due to an unusually cold and wet spring.
The new celeriac crop is offered both with and without leaves, catering to various segments including the fresh market, retail, and processing industries. This dual approach ensures that both fresh produce and processed celeriac are available to meet diverse consumer needs.
As the market adjusts to these supply constraints, the introduction of the new celeriac crop presents both challenges and opportunities for growers and stakeholders in the vegetable industry.
