Chile, a global leader in agricultural exports, has seen a remarkable surge in its food export market during the first eight months of 2024. Fresh fruit exports, in particular, played a significant role in this growth, with total deliveries exceeding $4.8 billion. According to ProChile and national customs records, Chilean food products reached 171 markets worldwide during this period. This export boom is being driven by the impressive performance of key fruit products like cherries, grapes, and apples.
Key Export Performances
- Cherries: As Chile’s flagship fruit export, cherries have seen a record-breaking year. In 2024, Chile exported nearly $2 billion worth of cherries, marking a 26.4% increase compared to 2023. This growth has been driven by increasing demand, particularly from China, where Chilean cherries are prized for their quality and freshness.
- Grapes: Another strong performer, grape exports reached $931 million by August 2024, reflecting a 17% increase year-over-year. Grapes remain a staple in Chile’s fruit export portfolio, with growing markets in the United States and Europe contributing to this success.
- Apples: Apple exports saw a more modest yet notable increase of 10%, with total shipments valued at $471 million. Chile’s diverse apple varieties, suited to different tastes and market needs, continue to attract buyers from across the globe.
Other Notable Fruit Exports
In addition to cherries, grapes, and apples, other fruits have also contributed to Chile’s export growth:
- Blueberries: Deliveries of blueberries increased by 21.2%, reaching $403 million in value.
- Plums: Plum exports saw the most significant percentage increase, rising by 40.6% to $308 million.
International Promotion and Expansion Efforts
To support and expand these markets, ProChile is preparing a series of international promotional events. Chile Week Brazil, held from September 30 to October 4, will provide a platform for Chilean exporters to meet with Brazilian importers. Later in the year, Chile will also participate in the SIAL trade fair in Paris (October 19–23), one of the world’s premier food sector exhibitions. Finally, the 9th Chile Week China will take place in December, where a delegation will promote Chilean exports in five Chinese cities, with a strong focus on food products.
Chile’s agricultural sector is seeing robust growth, thanks to its strategic focus on high-demand fruits like cherries, grapes, and apples. The country’s ability to access diverse markets, coupled with proactive international promotional efforts, has set the stage for continued success in 2024 and beyond. As global demand for fresh, high-quality fruit increases, Chile is well-positioned to remain a key player in the global agricultural export market.
