Samsun has emerged as Turkey’s leading region in the production of a rare and distinctive fruit: the purple eggplant fig. According to İbrahim Sağlam, Samsun’s Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, the city is set to obtain a geographical indication for this unique variety, further securing its place in Turkey’s agricultural landscape. The purple eggplant fig, a specialty of the Tekkeköy and Canik districts, distinguishes itself from other regional varieties due to its unique aroma and flavor.
Expansion of Purple Eggplant Fig Cultivation
The success of the purple eggplant fig in Samsun is no accident. With approximately 500 acres currently under cultivation, the local government has been working closely with farmers to expand production. In the past year alone, 50 farmers have been involved in establishing new orchards covering an additional 150 acres, each farmer managing 3-acre plots dedicated to fig cultivation.
Director İbrahim Sağlam emphasized that this expansion is driven not only by the fig’s agricultural viability but also by its potential to receive geographical indication (GI) status. This certification, which is nearing completion thanks to efforts by the Tekkeköy Municipality, would protect the unique characteristics of the purple eggplant fig and further enhance its market appeal.
The Unique Character of Samsun’s Figs
What sets the purple eggplant fig apart from other varieties, such as the widely cultivated Sarılop fig from the Aegean region or the fresh-market black fig from Bursa, is its distinctive aroma and taste. Grown primarily in Samsun’s Tekkeköy and Canik districts, this fig variety has a flavor that is unmatched elsewhere in Turkey.
Director Sağlam highlighted the significance of this variety: “The flavor of the purple eggplant fig from the Kutlukent region is unique and cannot be found in other parts of Samsun. While other areas produce figs, this particular type stands out due to its high quality and distinct taste.”
In terms of total fruit production, Samsun boasts over 1.26 million acres dedicated to various types of fruit cultivation, but the area devoted to the purple eggplant fig remains relatively small in comparison. However, with its geographical indication status soon to be secured, there are plans to further expand its cultivation, particularly in regions where it is known for its exceptional flavor.
