Spain’s fruit and vegetable exports to the European Union (EU) have seen remarkable growth in 2024, solidifying the country’s position as a leading exporter in the agricultural sector. From January to October 2024, Spain exported 8.3 million tons of fruits and vegetables to the EU, valued at €11.626 billion. This accounted for 84% of the total volume and 81% of the total value of Spain’s agricultural exports during the same period, which reached 9.8 million tons and €14.280 billion respectively.
Germany has become the largest market for Spanish agricultural products, with exports to the country increasing by 12% in volume, reaching 2.7 million tons, and 6% in value, amounting to €4.158 billion. This marks Germany as Spain’s top export destination, reaffirming its critical role in the EU agricultural market. In addition to Germany, France and the Netherlands also continue to play pivotal roles, with exports to both countries increasing by 9% in quantity and 4% in value for France, and 6% in quantity and 1% in value for the Netherlands.
Exports to France and the Netherlands reached 1.7 million tons and 723,108 tons respectively, valued at €2.327 billion and €1.075 billion. This growth reflects the sustained demand for Spanish fruits and vegetables in Western Europe, particularly as Spanish agricultural products are highly valued for their quality and freshness.
Beyond the EU, Spain continues to strengthen its export relationships with the UK, where 1 million tons of fresh produce were sold, a 6% increase from the previous period. The value of exports to the UK also rose by 8%, totaling €1.748 billion. While exports to the EU and the UK dominate, accounting for 97% of Spain’s total fruit and vegetable exports in 2024, the country’s shipments to non-European markets remain limited, at just 3% of the total export volume. These shipments amounted to 285,839 tons, valued at €415 million.
Spain’s fruit and vegetable export sector is experiencing robust growth, especially within the EU, where countries like Germany, France, and the Netherlands continue to increase demand. With a total export volume of 9.6 million tons in 2024, Spain is not only cementing its position as the EU’s primary supplier of fresh produce but also expanding its presence in global markets like the UK. Despite challenges in non-EU markets, Spain’s agricultural exports remain strong, with growth in both volume and value setting the stage for continued success in the years to come.
