The regulation, which allows for one year to expand access to the common European market for seven fruit and vegetable products from Moldova, was proposed by the European Commission, June 14 reports the agricultural portal Sad24.
Moldovan plums, table grapes, apples, tomatoes, garlic, cherries and grape juice, which have been subject to quotas so far, will be able to be imported duty-free into the European Union. The decision still needs to be approved by the European Parliament and the EU Council.
For a period of one year, the regulation more than doubles the number of listed products that can be imported duty-free from Moldova into the EU. It is estimated that potential duty-free volumes will cost around €55 million, including €10 million for plums.

The increase in the quota is intended to alleviate Moldova’s export problems after the loss of the Russian market. In some EU countries, gardeners were worried about this news. For example, Poland was not happy with this prospect, as cheaper Moldovan fruits will begin to compete with Polish ones.
EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski called on Moldovan colleagues to invest in production and processing capacities. He also stated that the European Union is ready to provide technical assistance in this regard.
