The authorities of the Kirov region intend to develop vegetable growing in the region to ensure food security. Milk processing and animal husbandry will also become priority areas, acting head of the region Alexander Sokolov said on Tuesday during an address to deputies of the legislative assembly of the region, heads of local governments and public associations.
“With almost complete self-sufficiency of the Kirov region with its agricultural products, vegetables remain the only missing position in the food basket. In order to strengthen food security, the development of vegetable growing becomes an important task,” Sokolov said.
He noted that the authorities will also pay special attention to animal husbandry. “The largest fur producer in the region – the Vyatka fur farm in the Slobodsky district – today has a population of about 110 thousand fur-bearing animals and is among the five largest in Russia. Such enterprises as Vyatka, in addition to contributing to the economy, also bring additional specifics, work to increase the recognition of the region,” Sokolov said.
According to him, the region provides itself with milk, poultry meat, eggs and pork by almost 100%. At the same time, milk processing remains a priority. “Our unconditional point of growth in the agro-industrial complex is dairy production with highly developed livestock breeding, breeding cattle are sent to 20 regions of Russia and Kazakhstan. In terms of milk production in agricultural organizations, the Kirov region now ranks fifth in Russia, I am convinced that this is not the limit,” the acting governor said.
In 2022, according to him, the construction of two dairy farms for 1.7 thousand livestock has been completed, and the implementation of seven investment projects for the construction and modernization of livestock facilities for 3.4 thousand livestock is also continuing. In addition, the region has the opportunity to return agricultural land to circulation and use it as a fodder base for dairy farms.
The volume of agricultural production in the region in 2021 amounted to almost 50 billion rubles, according to the results of last year, the region was in fourth place among the regions of the Volga Federal District in terms of the growth of the index of production in the agro-industrial complex, and in the first quarter of 2022 – in first place. This year, 2.2 billion rubles are provided for financing the agricultural industry, including 1.2 billion rubles from the federal budget.
