Scientists have found an ideal place for polar farming in Russia

Scientists have called the Krasnoselkupsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District ideal for the development of polar agriculture

Russian scientists of the Scientific Center for the Study of the Arctic have found an ideal area for the development of polar agriculture — the Krasnoselkupsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug turned out to be the most suitable for this. This is reported by the press service of the Government of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District.

Researchers have found unique types of soils that can be used to cultivate the land and provide Yamal residents with environmentally friendly products. It turned out that the locals grow potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, beets, greens and zucchini in the open ground.

“The studied soils are warm and sandy. Permafrost is practically absent. Therefore, in summer, the earth warms up quickly and absorbs moisture well, which is one of the important conditions for farming,” explained the choice of specialists, leading researcher Evgenia Morgun.

During the study, scientists conducted a chemical analysis of 70 kilograms of earth samples and described 11 soil profiles. The study of soil and vegetation of agrocenoses was carried out in the villages of Krasnoselkup, Tolka and Ratta.

The researchers found out that along with traditional fertilizers, Krasnoselkup gardeners add fish residues to the ground, and some residents throw the remains of forest game into the compost. According to scientists, the location of livestock complexes in villages perfectly contributes to the development of gardening in the area.

In August 2022, breeders of the Yamal experimental station in Salekhard collected the first harvest of Arctic potato varieties grown in laboratory conditions. According to experts, potatoes suitable for cultivation in the regions of the Arctic and the Far North will be prepared by 2024.
