If the prices of Brazilian and Chilean apples remain the same as last season, there is a good chance that Polish and Turkish apples will do well in the Indian market this season. The Polish harvest is bigger and the quality seems good, says an apple trader.
Saurabh Tanwar, CEO of Fruitways Chile, says he expects a better apple harvest from Poland, where Fruitways is also active: “In general, the yield from the production of Gala apples is 10% higher than last year’s harvest. apples cheaper this year than last year I would also say that the quality, especially the Gala apples, is better. It’s hard to say anything about the cheaper varieties right now, but I hear that the quality of the Polish apples is season is better than that of the Spanish and Italian apples, due to the higher temperatures in Spain and Italy during the harvest.”
India is having problems with its currency, which is losing value against the US dollar. This makes shipping very expensive, Tanwar explains. “India has its own challenges, there is also inflation, while the value of the INR Rupees has fallen by 10% against the US dollar. I think it will continue to fall against the dollar. Transport costs are still high , from USD 3,400 previously to USD 6,000 now, and material costs are still very high, so India is also looking at apples from Turkey and Iran.”
Although India has been dealing with flooding, Tanwar believes that prices will affect the demand for apples more than the weather conditions: “I don’t think the floods in India will affect the demand for apples, but the cost of the apples will definitely affect demand. Looking at last season, the Gala apples from Chile (USD 29) and Brazil (USD 23) were a disaster in the Indian market due to their high price and lower quality. At the same time, the unethical practice of some large Indian importers to declare a parallel value to customs instead of the actual value, either. While Chilean and Brazilian apples failed in the Indian market, Polish and Turkish apples sold very well, because they were sold at a lower price. were offered.”
Tanwar hopes the new season will be much better than the previous one. “To be honest, the Indian market has been a disaster this last year, not only for apples, but also for other fruits. I hope the Gala apples do well in the market this season. I expect Poland and Turkey to do well. especially if the prices of apples from Chile, Brazil and New Zealand remain the same,” he concludes.
