Time to collect… harvest. And if the grains and legumes are already in the bins, then the harvesting of vegetables continues. The Volga region is in the lead. Here, only one of the agricultural enterprises collects more than half of the total harvest of open-ground vegetables in the region. Carrots, potatoes, beets and cabbage are removed from the fields. Moreover, the products almost immediately hit the shelves of stores. Agrarians assure that they can provide the whole region with vegetables.
The quality of the harvested crop depends on the fast, clear and well-coordinated work of the team. After all, all this cabbage will go to large retail chains, and there the requirements for products are high. Farmers are responsible for their vegetables, they say. The heads are smooth, dense and crispy. Special conveyors are used for harvesting cabbage – this is the development of specialists of the Yaroslavl company.
The “Alliance” grows cabbage of different maturation periods. Moreover, they use varieties that have already proven themselves well. Early, for example, “Pushma”, “Artost”, “konkeror”. It has already been collected in June-July.
“They give an excellent harvest, every year, no matter what weather conditions. They can withstand the heat and waterlogging,” said Nadezhda Voloshchuk, chief agronomist of the Alliance enterprise.
By the way, the weather did not spoil the rains this year. Late cabbage could not “get fed up” for a long time, as farmers say. Because of this, they will receive only about 40 percent of the harvest that they expected.
“Last year there was also a drought, but not as severe as this year. We haven’t had a single rain for 70 days,” said Nikolay Voloshchuk, head of the Alliance enterprise.
There are more than 170 hectares under cabbage on the farm, and every day farmers harvest several tens of tons of crops. All cabbage is sent to a special storage: here it is prepared for shipment to retail chains. There are many nuances. To begin with, they are cleaned of excess and weak leaves.
Under a jet of air, they just fly away. The “golden” standard of the head is from half a kilo to four and a half. Otherwise, the networks will not accept. 20 kilograms of cabbage are packed into each grid. The final stage is packaging with film.
Harvesting is also underway in the potato fields of the Alliance. Special equipment works: several combines and a digger with side unloading. This unit extracts potatoes from two rows at once and lays them along the furrow. The combine harvester both cleans and sorts the harvest. It is equipped with a hopper that holds more than four tons of potatoes.
They say that this year there were not the best conditions for potato ripening.
“This year, everyone has not a very good potato harvest, average. The problem will be for those who have a supply contract on the network. Because there are strict requirements for the caliber. This year, 70 percent have not grown to this caliber,” said Nikolay Voloshchuk, head of the Alliance enterprise.
However, picking potatoes is half the battle. It is important to properly prepare it for the winter period. Before laying it for storage, it is cleaned and sorted again.
The last stage is laying in wooden containers. Each holds more than a ton of potatoes. There are more than a thousand of them here in the hangar. Potatoes are stored at a moderate temperature. By the way, in all farms of the region, after harvesting, it is checked for viruses and diseases. So only a high-quality and healthy product arrives on the shelves of stores.
