The development of vegetable and potato growing was one of the main issues considered at the December meeting of the public council under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Novosibirsk Region.
“Developing our own vegetable and potato growing is perhaps the highest priority task for the agro-industrial complex of our region,” emphasized Evgeny Leshchenko, Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Agriculture of the Novosibirsk Region. “Of course, vegetable and potato producers, like other agricultural producers, enjoy the current federal and regional state support, but for the more active development of this sector in the region, additional measures must be taken, and such state support is now being developed.”
In 2022, the region harvested 85,000 tons of open field vegetables and 270,000 tons of potatoes. Among the districts of the Novosibirsk region, the leaders in the production of vegetables and potatoes in agricultural enterprises are the Novosibirsk and Orda districts, they account for more than 80% of the produced potatoes and more than 95% of vegetables. Agricultural enterprises, solving the problem of providing residents of the region with locally produced potatoes, increased the area under potatoes by almost 700 hectares in 2022 – up to 3.4 thousand hectares. But it is still too early to talk about the complete self-sufficiency of the region in potatoes and vegetables. Now our region produces about 45% of the need for vegetables of the “borscht set” and 65% – potatoes.
Farms that grow vegetables can take advantage of state support measures with the help of the state program “Development of Agriculture and Regulation of Agricultural Products, Raw Materials and Food Markets in the Novosibirsk Region” approved by the Government of the region. In the strategic plans for the development of the agro-industrial complex of the region, it is planned to increase the production of potatoes by 50% by 2027, and three times the production of vegetables of the “borscht set”.
