The year 2023 has proven to be remarkably fruitful for apricots, peaches, and nectarines in Uzbekistan. The bumper harvest has led to a surplus of peaches and nectarines, resulting in lower prices, but at the same time, it has opened up new opportunities for Uzbekistan to expand its fruit exports. In the third decade of May, the first peaches and nectarines were shipped to international markets, and within the first two months of the export season, record-breaking volumes have already been achieved.
According to preliminary trade statistics, from May 21 to July 20 of this year, Uzbekistan exported a total of 51.1 thousand tons of peaches and nectarines, generating a combined revenue of 41 million dollars. This represents a 27 percent increase in volume and revenue compared to the same period last year. In contrast, the export of these fruits during a similar period in 2021 was only half of the current year’s achievement.
As the export season for peaches and nectarines is in full swing and will continue for a couple more months, industry analysts predict that Uzbekistan is set to surpass its previous export record. The previous record was achieved in 2020 when the country exported 82.2 thousand tons of peaches and nectarines, earning a total revenue of 61.3 million dollars.
Comparing the figures to the previous record year, it becomes evident that during the first two months of this season, the volume of exports increased by 25 percent compared to the same period in 2020.
The surge in export volumes can be attributed to both the abundant harvest and the relatively low prices set for peaches and nectarines this season. As of July 21 this year, the average wholesale price for peaches and nectarines in Uzbekistan was 27 percent lower than on the same date last year and 38 percent lower than on the corresponding day in 2021.
The combination of a bountiful harvest and competitive pricing has made Uzbek peaches and nectarines highly attractive to international buyers, leading to a significant surge in exports. This boost in trade is likely to have positive implications for Uzbekistan’s economy, as it not only strengthens the country’s position in the global fruit market but also brings in substantial foreign revenue.
