The Aksu Sugar Factory, located in the Zhetyssu region of Kazakhstan, plans to process up to 100,000 tons of sugar beets this year. The cultivation area for sugar beets in the region exceeded 8,000 hectares, and there are ambitious plans to almost double this area by 2026, reaching 15,000 hectares. This article explores the development and potential consequences of expanding sugar beet processing in the region.
Under the leadership of Nurdaulet Kenenbayev, the head of the regional agricultural department, the cultivation area for sugar beets in Zhetyssu region has shown significant growth, reaching over 8,000 hectares this year. The Aksu Sugar Factory aims to process 80,000 tons of raw materials, but with expected higher yields, they are hopeful of reaching 100,000 tons of sugar beets. To accommodate this increase, there are plans to gradually expand the cultivation areas of sweet roots in the Aksu, Alakol, and Sarkansky districts. Moreover, the Koksu Sugar Factory continues its operations, processing sugar cane during the offseason, ensuring year-round production and increased sugar output.
One notable example of successful agriculture practices can be found in the Sarkansky district, where a single agricultural entity, “Muhamadi,” adheres to modern agrotechnologies, resulting in sugar beets weighing between 300 to 500 grams and a remarkable yield of over 500 tons per hectare.
Another example is the agricultural enterprise “Jasulan Muhamadi,” which operates on a total area of 548 hectares, with 160 hectares dedicated to sugar beet cultivation. The farm also cultivates barley, wheat, corn, and Chinese beans.
The planned expansion of sugar beet processing at the Aksu Sugar Factory is expected to have several positive consequences for the region’s agriculture and economy. Firstly, it will create new employment opportunities in the sugar industry, providing jobs for local residents. Secondly, the increase in sugar beet cultivation will encourage farmers to adopt modern agricultural practices, leading to higher yields and more sustainable agriculture.
Moreover, the growth in sugar production is likely to boost the region’s economy by contributing to export revenues and reducing dependence on sugar imports. The surplus sugar production can be traded domestically and internationally, further strengthening Kazakhstan’s position in the global market.
The development of the sugar beet industry also complements the government’s efforts to diversify the agricultural sector, reducing reliance on a limited range of crops and encouraging the cultivation of various agricultural products. Additionally, it will help stabilize the livelihoods of farmers by providing them with a more diversified and profitable income source.
The optimization of sugar beet processing at the Aksu Sugar Factory and the expansion of cultivation areas in the Zhetyssu region are significant steps towards boosting agriculture development in Kazakhstan. The positive consequences of this development are expected to foster economic growth, enhance agricultural practices, and contribute to the nation’s self-sufficiency in sugar production.
