Art of Azerbaijan Agriculture: Onion Production
Onion, which is one of the most important plants in the ancient agricultural field of Azerbaijan, has been successfully planted in the country in recent years. Compared to the calendar of the State Statistics Committee, the area planted in Azerbaijan in January-August 2023 increased by 13.8% and reached 11,036 hectares. Many factors such as the efforts of local farmers and field entrepreneurs, technological development, the quality of the situation, and the efficiency of the situation lie behind this growth.
One of the regions that play a major role in onion production is the Karabakh-Aran zone. Autumn and spring onions are planted in this region. For this year, 1,240 hectares of autumn and 870 hectares of spring were planted. In this region, local entrepreneurs produce 50-60 thousand tons of onions. The accelerated organization of work and the efficiency of the field, of course, played a significant role in increasing the production.
Domestic varieties prevail within the relevant conditions and technological requirements of local and foreign varieties. Fast-growing and medium-growing varieties are considered suitable for planting in forest and mountain areas. The average yield per hectare is 196-200 quintals, which means that the country can export significant quantities, exceeding its own needs.
Despite quotas and export bans imposed by the state, the country’s need for its own production is fully met thanks to field entrepreneurs and union assets. This promotes cooperation between local partners and foreign partners and shows that Azerbaijan has succeeded in becoming a significant vegetable exporter in the region.
