In the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, Sphosakhe Cele’s journey from sustenance farming to agricultural entrepreneurship is a testament to the transformative power of passion and dedication. In 2011, the loss of his grandmother, Nomntwana Dlaba, became a pivotal moment that led him to the world of agriculture.
The Solace in Farming:
Facing financial hardships after his grandmother’s passing, Cele found solace in farming. With a modest investment of R100 from his grandfather, he started with 50 cabbages and 50 spinach plants. What began as sustenance farming quickly evolved into a profitable venture, earning him R1,800. Motivated by this success, Cele transitioned to business farming, cultivating cabbages, beetroot, carrots, green peppers, and potatoes on a one-hectare plot.
Tough Choices and Tougher Life:
Cele’s childhood was marked by hardships, including the loss of his mother at age six, an identity crisis, and the subsequent death of his grandmother. Overwhelmed by financial constraints, he had to drop out of high school during grade 11. However, his love for education persisted, and despite challenges, Cele found a way forward through agriculture, establishing Hard Journey Agri-Business in 2018.
Challenges and Aspirations:
Running a successful agricultural business hasn’t shielded Cele from challenges. Lacking a matriculation certificate limits his access to certain opportunities. Still, he dreams of expanding into livestock and growing various vegetables. Acknowledging the reliability of livestock in KwaZulu-Natal, he emphasizes the importance of consistency for small-scale farmers.
Looking to the Future:
Cele’s aspirations include continuing his studies, focusing on crop production, and overcoming obstacles like the lack of essential tools and proper fencing on his inherited 20-hectare land. Despite the challenges, he sees the land as his late grandmother’s legacy and is determined to make her proud.
Sphosakhe Cele’s journey exemplifies the resilience and tenacity required in agriculture. From humble beginnings, he has grown a thriving enterprise, showcasing the potential for success in the face of adversity. As he dreams of expanding and overcoming challenges, Cele’s story inspires others to pursue their agricultural aspirations.
