On August 6, 2022, a batch of fresh peppers in the amount of 13 tons was delivered to the territory of the Omsk region, accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate of the Republic of Kazakhstan. During the inspection by specialists of the territorial Department of Rosselkhoznadzor, a quarantine harmful weed – dodder (CUSCUTA SPP), which is included in the “Unified List of Quarantine Objects of the Eurasian Economic Union”, was detected in the products.
The presence of a quarantine object in a viable state was confirmed by a laboratory examination conducted by specialists from the Omsk Reference Center of Rosselkhoznadzor.
In accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, in order to prevent the spread of a quarantine weed in the region, the infected part of the cargo was destroyed by burning under the control of Rosselkhoznadzor specialists.
Since the beginning of 2022, the Office of the Rosselkhoznadzor for the Omsk Region has identified 21 cases of infection with quarantine pests of plant products imported into the territory of the Russian Federation, 4 of them with dodder (Cuscuta spp.).
Dodder is an annual parasitic weed that has neither roots nor leaves. Being a serious weed of crops and plantings of agricultural plants, dodder causes significant damage to agriculture, reducing yields and deteriorating product quality.
