Appellando, a platform dedicated to improving grievance mechanisms in supply chains, achieved its goal of becoming operational in Spain in 2024. Spanish agricultural producers now have access to two independent local hotline operators, providing their employees with a secure channel to voice complaints without fear of retaliation. These systems currently support over ten production companies and groups, collectively representing more than 10,000 workers. Recognized by Appellando’s participating retailers, the initiative is financially supported to ensure the successful resolution of grievances at a local level.
A Commitment to Social Responsibility
Appellando’s efforts aim to enhance social responsibility and transparency within the agricultural labor market. In December, the organization conducted its first training sessions and dialogues with workers on berry farms and in migrant labor accommodations in Huelva. These interactions are vital for adapting grievance mechanisms to workers’ specific needs, ensuring their effectiveness and sustainability.
An interactive micro-training platform has also been developed for workers with limited literacy skills. This innovative tool provides accessible anti-discrimination training and empowers workers by increasing their knowledge of labor rights and boosting their confidence to assert these rights.
Expanding into Global Markets
In addition to its Spanish operations, Appellando has extended its reach to South Africa. In December, the Sustainability Initiative of South Africa (SIZA) joined Appellando as an Operational Grievance Mechanism (OGM) provider. This partnership marks a significant milestone in setting and advancing global standards for grievance mechanisms in supply chains.
Appellando’s global network aims to amplify workers’ voices and uphold their rights. Plans for 2025 include introducing its standardized procedures and formats in additional countries to further improve labor conditions and raise social standards across agriculture and other sectors.
A Vision for the Future
Appellando, founded as an EHI project in 2023 and now a fully-owned subsidiary of EHI since March 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Kristian Möller, continues to harmonize grievance mechanisms worldwide. The organization’s multi-stakeholder partnerships strive to protect human rights and the environment in supply chains, ensuring all workers and rights holders have access to trusted support channels.
Appellando’s initiatives in Spain and South Africa highlight its growing influence in improving worker welfare globally. By fostering trust and accessibility in grievance systems, Appellando sets a benchmark for social responsibility and labor rights in agriculture. Its innovative training solutions and strategic expansions are paving the way for higher labor standards and better working conditions worldwide.
