Currently, breeders are forced to apply to such bodies abroad, which makes their work unprofitable.
The Parliament of Georgia, with 75 votes in the first reading, approved the amendments to the Law “On New Species of Animals and Plants”, which imply the creation of a new department responsible for registering and checking varieties of plants and animal breeds.
According to Nino Tsilosani, one of the initiators of the bill, deputy of the ruling party “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia”, the amendments are aimed at protecting the interests of breeders.
“After breeding new varieties, it is impossible to register the exclusive right of a breeder, since there is no accredited body in Georgia that will conduct plant tests necessary for registration for diversity, uniformity and stability,” she noted.
At the same time, she noted that breeders are forced to apply to such bodies abroad, which makes their work unprofitable.
According to her, the conclusion of the new body will be valid for obtaining copyright for the variety in Georgia.
