Australia’s strict biosafety requirements for fresh Vietnamese pomelo:
According to Document No. 147/SPS-BNNVN dated 3 May 2024 issued by the Vietnam SPS Office, Australia has proposed a draft risk analysis for the import of fresh pomelo from Vietnam. The document stipulates that fresh pomelos from Vietnam can be released into the Australian market if they comply with special biosecurity measures for 19 harmful species, including citrus leafblight, false spider mites and fruit flies.
Measures to combat various pests:
To control pests such as psyllids and fruit flies, growing areas, packaging areas or production areas must be free of insects. Effective pest control strategies, such as fumigation of psyllids with methyl bromide and irradiation of fruit flies, are needed. Visual inspections are necessary to identify pests such as false spider mites, scale insects, red spiders and thrips, followed by action if any infestation is detected. In addition, effective systemic approaches are needed to minimize the risk of citrus canker on pomelo.
New Taiwan (China) import rules:
In a communication regarding new regulations on imported goods, Vietnam’s SPS Office received notification from the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration about products classified under certain CCC codes, especially those related to chili peppers and dried fruits. Products falling under these categories must be tested for the presence of Sudanese dyes after detection of Sudanese dyes in imported consignments of chilli powder originating from various countries, including Vietnam.
Mandatory testing of Sudanese dyes:
The Taiwanese FDA proposes mandatory testing for the presence of Sudanese dyes in certain foods. In particular, products under CCC codes 0904.22.00.00-1 (crushed or ground pepper) and 0904.21.90.00-3 (dried pepper) must provide test reports for Sudan I-IV, including test methods, limits of quantitation (LOQ) and testing. units.
These new regulations highlight the importance of strict quality control and compliance measures for Vietnamese agricultural exporters. Compliance with these standards not only ensures continued market access, but also enhances the reputation of Vietnamese agricultural products on the global stage.
