In the heart of Milan, a pioneering project is changing the landscape of urban living. Forrest in Town, a condominium shaped like an ancient rural village, opened its doors on November 21, 2023, at Via Zumbini 39. Developed by the collaboration between Agricooltur and Building Group, this residential complex introduces an aeroponic garden available to all residents, revolutionizing the concept of sustainable urban living.
Greening Condominiums: A Milanese Trend
Forrest in Town aligns with Milan’s trend towards bio-architecture and green regeneration projects. Spanning a 450sqm internal courtyard, the collective garden incorporates three aeroponic cultivation lines, designed by the Italian company Agricooltur. Founded in 2018 by Marco Bartolomeo Divià, Alessandro Boniforte, and Stefano Ferrero, Agricooltur aims to provide nearly 22,000 vegetables and microgreens, including herbs and salads, to Forrest In Town residents.
Aeroponics Unveiled: Sustainable Cultivation in the Urban Space
The shared garden employs aeroponic cultivation, a method where plants grow suspended above ground, receiving water and nutrients through controlled root systems. This innovative approach minimizes the spread of pests and diseases typical in soil cultivation. The aeroponic system also leads to a remarkable 98% reduction in water usage, offering fresh produce year-round. Moreover, it decreases fertilizer usage by 10%, contributing to soil conservation.
Urbancooltur: Orchestrating the Aeroponic Symphony
Urbancooltur, an application entrusted with managing the greenhouse, allows residents to order and collect produce from the concierge service at scheduled times. Additionally, the harvested plants can thrive in residents’ homes using the Microhortus system, replicating their original environment.
The Minds Behind Forrest in Town: Agricooltur and Building Group
Forrest in Town is a brainchild of the Building Group, designed by DFA Partners in collaboration with Boffa Petrone & Partners. The aeroponic garden’s realization stems from a synergy with Agricooltur, renowned for patenting this innovative aeroponic farming system present in various restaurants across Italy. Bartolomeo Marco Divià, CEO and founder of Agricooltur, envisions this aeroponic agriculture as a transformative force, turning buildings into sustainable food production ecosystems.
Forrest in Town epitomizes a harmonious fusion of urban life and sustainable agriculture. As Milan pioneers this innovative approach, the condominium sets an inspiring precedent for future urban development projects worldwide. The integration of aeroponic gardens not only provides fresh produce but also redefines the relationship between residents and the food they consume, offering a glimpse into a more sustainable and interconnected urban future.
