On September 20th, the village of Novoe Baturino in the Rybnovsky District hosted the “Barynya Kapusta” (“Lady Cabbage”) festival, a vibrant celebration of agricultural tradition and community spirit. While the event featured thematic processions, a 51-kilogram collective cabbage pie, and a festive atmosphere, the undisputed highlight was the “Kochan Barin” (“Cabbage Baron”) competition to find the heaviest cabbage. This year, the winner was a colossal head weighing an impressive 12.5 kilograms, grown by Natalya Nikitina from the village of Vysokoye.
Natalya, who comes from a family with generations of vegetable-growing experience, revealed the champion variety to be ‘Cesile’. She reported planting 40,000 heads this season, cultivating a range of modern hybrids including ‘Megaton’, ‘Vestriia’, and ‘Atria’. When asked for her secret, she emphasized fundamental, yet precisely executed, agronomic practices: vigilant pest monitoring and timely control, consistent weeding, regular fertilizer application, and understanding the crop’s preference for cool weather and ample irrigation. Notably, her record-breaking cabbage was not grown in isolation but emerged from a commercial-scale field, proving that excellence can be achieved at volume.
