Strawberry harvest in Germany this year is the smallest in 24 years. This is reported by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden.
Destatis estimates that the total strawberry production in the Federal Republic this year is 91,300 tons. The latest low dates back to 1998, when German producers exported 81,500 tons from the country. Strawberry harvest in Germany over the past five years has averaged 115,600 tons.
The agency in Wiesbaden cites the reduction in acreage as the cause of the relapse. Gardeners grew strawberries on about 9,700 hectares. Compared to the previous year, this is 9 percent less. Destatis also cites declining consumer interest in German-grown strawberries as a reason.
