In the fertile floodplains near the Oka River in the Serpukhov urban district, agricultural experts at “Dashkovka” are wrapping up the cabbage harvest season. This year’s highlight is the Storidor variety, known for producing up to 100 tons of cabbage per hectare, a yield level that demonstrates the success of well-orchestrated agronomic practices. According to chief agronomist Olga Merkulova, the farm has already harvested 3,000 tons of cabbage, with an expected total of 4,500 tons as the operation concludes.
Covering 50 hectares, the harvest process relies on the coordinated efforts of six tractors, including a specialized cabbage transporter, and a team of 13 field workers. With efficiency in mind, the team plans to finish harvesting within ten days, after which the land will be plowed to prepare it for winter rest. This approach ensures soil health and optimal conditions for future planting seasons.
The Storidor variety’s success can be attributed to its robust genetic traits and adaptability to the region’s climatic conditions. This late-maturing cabbage variety also offers excellent storage potential, capable of remaining fresh until April or May. Proper post-harvest handling and storage techniques are critical for maintaining quality. Cabbage is stored at a temperature of 0°C to 1°C with high humidity to preserve its nutritional value, allowing for a steady supply throughout the winter. Sorting and distribution from the storage base ensure that the produce reaches retail networks in top condition.
Serpukhov’s agricultural sector is further enriched by diverse enterprises, such as “Villa Izobilya,” which cultivates strawberries, and “Serpukhovfarmer,” specializing in poultry. The area’s agricultural diversity highlights a growing trend of specialization and innovation, providing the community with a range of fresh, locally produced food items year-round.
The high-yield cabbage harvest at “Dashkovka” exemplifies how strategic cultivation and efficient management can maximize productivity. By investing in resilient crop varieties and optimizing harvest logistics, Serpukhov’s agricultural enterprises are setting a benchmark for sustainable and profitable vegetable farming.
