Seasonal Demand Decline
As summer holidays begin across German states, demand is expected to weaken. Canteens and household purchases typically decline during this period, reducing market activity. Additionally, high temperatures pose risks of harvest and quality losses, though current forecasts predict moderating conditions later in the week, which may stabilize production (DWD, 2024).
Low Promotional Activity in Retail
Despite the surplus, retail promotions for iceberg lettuce remain below average. In Week 27, only six conventional lettuce promotions were recorded, with prices ranging between €0.65–€0.99 per head, while organic options were advertised at €1.99 per head (AMI, 2024). Increased promotional efforts could help stimulate demand but have so far been limited.
The iceberg lettuce market remains under pressure due to oversupply and declining seasonal demand. While minor price recoveries have occurred, significant improvements are unlikely until supply adjusts or promotional activity increases. Growers and retailers should monitor weather impacts and adjust strategies accordingly.
