The government of the new President of Kenya, William Ruto, lifted a 10-year ban on the cultivation and import of genetically modified crops and animal feed, on October 4, Africanews reports.
The government’s announcement to lift the ban on the cultivation and import of GM products was made when the country is experiencing the worst drought in 40 years. Experts estimate that at least 4 million people are starving in 23 districts of Kenya — this forces the government to provide them with food aid.
Ksenia did not want to approve the import and planting of GM crops amid continuing concerns about possible health risks.
GM products have a number of advantages, such as higher yields and resistance to drought and pests, so the government of Ruto lifted the ban in the hope of correcting the situation with a poor harvest.
The Kenyan authorities want to change the direction of agriculture, reduce its dependence on water-intensive production by planting drought-resistant crops.
Agriculture is the backbone of the Kenyan economy, accounting for 20% of GDP. By making this decision, it became the second country on the continent after South Africa to allow GM products.
