In 2024, the city has expanded its potato production area to 261,300 hectares, up from 194,800 hectares in 2023. The yield has similarly increased, with an expected harvest of 1.045 million tons of potatoes, compared to 757,480 tons in the previous year. According to Niğde’s Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Asım Baş, “Our daily potato exports have reached 250-300 tons, and we are now reaching markets in Syria, Dubai, and even as far as Mauritania in Africa.”
Potato Exports Fuel Economic Growth
Niğde has long been recognized as Turkey’s top potato-producing region. In 2024, nearly 80-90% of the city’s potato harvest is destined for international markets. This robust export activity is not only providing stable income for local farmers but also boosting the regional economy. The strategic expansion of potato cultivation in Niğde has helped meet growing demand in foreign markets, particularly in regions like the Middle East and Africa, where food imports are crucial.
Potato farming in Niğde also benefits from advanced agricultural infrastructure and favorable export conditions. As Baş noted, “Niğde is growing its export potential thanks to improved agricultural infrastructure, and we are consistently among the top producers in key crops such as potatoes, cabbage, rye, apples, and tomatoes.”
Cabbage and Apple Production in Niğde
While potato exports are a significant focus, Niğde also excels in cabbage production, ranking second in Turkey. The city produces approximately 132,155 tons of cabbage annually across 25 villages. In terms of overall agricultural diversification, cabbage remains a steady contributor to the regional agricultural economy, maintaining consistent yields year over year.
Niğde is also a major player in Turkey’s apple industry. In 2024, the apple production area increased to 246,900 hectares, with an expected yield of 621,788 tons—up from 581,304 tons in 2023. With the apple harvest already underway, it is expected to continue through October, adding to Niğde’s impressive export portfolio.
