Imported seeds of corn, potatoes and sugar beet from farmers in the Nizhny Novgorod region were in short supply. The Ministry of Agriculture promises that in a few years the problem will be solved and the region will completely switch to self-sufficiency with seed material. This was reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Resources of the Nizhny Novgorod region on September 5.

According to the Minister of Agriculture of the Nizhny Novgorod region Nikolay Denisov, there are 32 organizations in the region engaged in seed propagation and their production.

“During the sowing campaign, there were questions about providing farmers with seeds. Now the questions remain about sugar beet — here we have self-sufficiency of up to 60%. Also, 85% of the products of the highest category are made from potato varieties common in the region. But this is a direction that requires active development. As for other cultures, the picture is much better here. We use about 90% of grain crops in our selection. This applies to both sweet corn and flax varieties,” the minister said in an interview with NewsNN.

Nizhny Novgorod farmers said that they do not experience problems with grain and legumes. There are not enough foreign seeds of potatoes, corn and sugar beet.

“With all this, the situation is not catastrophic. “Imported corn has disappeared, and I am glad about it. They gave a sigh to the producer of domestic varieties. Of course, they have increased their prices since this spring, but not much compared to foreign suppliers. And as before, our corn is more liquid, the quality is not inferior at all,” said the director of the seed distributor LLC Agroleader of the Volga region Andrey Petushkov.
