June saw a significant downturn in vegetable prices, plummeting to pre-pandemic levels and falling below expectations. Roberta Tardera, a key figure within OP Ioppì, attributes this decline to intensified competition from foreign markets and reduced demand from both Italian and international retail giants.
“Cherry tomatoes, in particular, saw a drastic price drop from €0.80 to €0.40/kg towards the end of the production cycle,” noted Roberta Tardera. “These prices fail to cover our production costs, with the processing industry offering even lower rates at €0.20-0.25/kg.”
In response to these challenging market conditions, OP Ioppì introduced a new product line – cherry tomato sauce. This innovative addition has garnered positive feedback from consumers, highlighting the brand’s commitment to quality and consumer satisfaction.
“Our ‘Gourmet’ colored tomato varieties, including Pixel and Piccadilly, have fared slightly better with prices ranging from €0.60 to €0.30/kg,” Tardera added. “Similarly, plum tomatoes have seen a range of €1/kg for premium produce to €0.50/kg for older batches.”
However, amidst these challenges, Sweet Palermo peppers have emerged as a success story for OP Ioppì this year. Praised for their sweetness and digestibility, Sweet Palermo peppers have maintained robust pricing and secured strong market presence both in Italian retail chains and wholesale markets.
Looking ahead to the upcoming production and commercial campaign, OP Ioppì aims to expand its footprint within Italy by focusing on premium product lines. Furthermore, the cooperative plans to strengthen its partnerships with major retail chains in Eastern Europe, leveraging the growing demand for high-quality Italian agricultural products in these regions.
