This summer, Peru expects avocado exports to the United States of more than 250 million pounds of avocado, according to the Peruvian Avocado Commission, a record volume and considerable growth over previous years.
According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in 2021, 186.35 million pounds of avocado were shipped to the United States from Peru, a volume 8.4% higher than the 170.64 million pounds shipped in 2020, which means that a volume of 250 million pounds would imply an increase of 34% over 2021.
This increase in avocado exports from Peru will allow the country to play a more important role as a supplier of this product to the United States, given that avocado exports from South America are led by Peru, although quite far from the volumes sent by Mexico.

This additional Peruvian volume in the U.S. market faces a shorter than usual California avocado season and volatility in the Mexican market, says Carson McDaniel, director of business development for McDaniel Fruit.
Furthermore, this volume corresponds to a trend of increasing avocado consumption in the United States, which is expected to continue until at least 2030.
For this season, Peru also expects to supply the US market with volumes of large avocados, which can be better promoted than other sizes.
When it comes to promoting the product in the store, bigger is usually better, when it comes to avocados. “If you can display more, you can generally sell more. However, offering a mix of different sizes and SKUs can also help to increase sales,” mentions Patrick Cortes, senior director of business development and food service for Mission Produce.
