Apple production, according to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, by the end of 2022 will not be lower than in 2021. In total, the country produces a significant amount of pome seeds – about 1.15-1.25 million tons per year, the press service of the Rosselkhoznadzor reported.
Against this background, the import of imported apples into Russia is systematically decreasing. If, according to the results of 11.5 months of 2021, the supply volumes were 777 thousand tons, then for the same period in 2021 they decreased by 24% to 592 thousand tons. 12 out of 20 countries – the main exporters of apples – this year have reduced supplies to Russia.
The niche of almost 200,000 tons thus opened up can be occupied by domestic companies next year, which will lead to an increase in domestic production and even better results in the framework of import substitution.
“It is worth noting that Moldova, the leading supplier of apples, has been reducing the flow of fruit and vegetable products sent to Russia over the past 4 years. If in 2019 the country exported 355 thousand tons of plant products to Russia, of which 250 thousand tons were apples, then by December 6, 2022, only 215 thousand tons of vegetables and fruits were imported, including 160 thousand tons of apples. The reduction in supplies was observed annually,” the press service of the department noted.
According to the Rosselkhoznadzor, increasing the volume of domestic production and covering the vacant niche in the market should not prevent trade in safe products with friendly countries. The presence of foreign goods balances the market, and competitive conditions are an important factor in keeping prices down.
