In recent years, Zelenogradsk District has witnessed a significant agricultural breakthrough with the establishment of sea buckthorn plantations. The municipal authorities have embarked on an ambitious plan to cultivate this valuable berry, known for its robust health benefits and versatile applications.
Covering an initial area of three hectares near the village of Novoselskoye, the plantation is set to expand further. By the end of October, an additional hectare will be brought under cultivation, with plans to extend the plantation to eight hectares by spring 2024.
To initiate this endeavor, the authorities procured 5,500 two-year-old seedlings from the Altai Nursery. Among these, 5,000 belong to the coveted “Chuyskaya” variety, recognized for its winter hardiness, low thorniness, and the delightful sweet-tart taste of its fruits. An additional 250 seedlings each of the male varieties “Gnom” and “Aley” were also acquired.
The cultivation of sea buckthorn is not merely an agricultural venture; it symbolizes a sustainable future. Once the Novoselskoye sea buckthorn reaches the fruit-bearing stage, plans are underway for its processing. This step aligns with the district’s vision of preserving the unique properties of this berry for an extended period, ensuring both economic and nutritional sustainability.
This initiative builds upon the success of the “Vostok” regional program, which provided crucial support to the agricultural sector. The program enabled the establishment of the first sea buckthorn plantation in the Kaliningrad region in 2021. Alongside sea buckthorn, new plantations of currants, raspberries, blackberries, and gooseberries have also emerged, diversifying the region’s agricultural landscape.
The Kaliningrad region’s agricultural sector witnessed a remarkable yield in 2022, with a total harvest of 52,000 tons of various berries and fruits. Apples, pears, plums, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, black currants, and other varieties thrive in the region. These fruits serve as the foundation for producing an array of products, including juices, jams, and semi-finished goods, contributing significantly to the local economy.
