Asparagus is a labor-intensive crop, traditionally requiring significant manpower during the harvest season. With the growing demand for efficient and precise harvesting solutions, Lommers Tuinbouwmachines, a first-time exhibitor at expoSE 2024, is set to disrupt the industry with its fully automated asparagus harvesting machine. After three years of development, the machine is ready to be delivered to customers in spring 2024, signaling a new era in agricultural technology.

Efficiency and Precision: How the Machine Works

The autonomous asparagus harvester from Lommers is equipped with two harvest heads, each capable of harvesting an asparagus spear in just 3 seconds. This speed is essential for maximizing productivity, as the machine can perform between 15,000 to 20,000 harvesting operations over an 8-hour workday. Operating at this efficiency translates to approximately one asparagus spear being harvested every 1.5 seconds, a feat that dramatically reduces the need for human labor while maintaining high precision.

One of the most impressive features of the machine is its ability to adapt its speed based on the asparagus density per hectare. When the machine identifies gaps in the crop where no asparagus is visible, it automatically increases its speed to move swiftly to the next harvest area. This adaptability not only saves time but also optimizes energy use and resource allocation.

The technology behind the machine ensures that the harvested asparagus remains upright in the soil, making it easy for collection and minimizing crop damage. This level of precision is crucial for maintaining the quality of the produce, which is a key concern for farmers focused on delivering high-quality asparagus to markets.

The introduction of this autonomous harvester comes at a time when many farmers are facing increasing labor shortages, particularly during peak harvest seasons. Asparagus, being one of the most labor-intensive crops, has traditionally required significant manual effort, leading to higher production costs. The Lommers machine offers a practical solution by significantly reducing labor dependency while maintaining harvesting accuracy.

This innovation is not only set to increase productivity but also to lower operational costs. For farmers, especially large-scale asparagus producers, this machine could potentially transform their business models by enabling more efficient use of resources. The new machine will be one of the central attractions at expoSE 2024, Europe’s leading trade fair for asparagus and berry production, which will be held in Karlsruhe, Germany, from November 20-21, 2024. The expo will bring together around 430 exhibitors from 13 countries, showcasing the latest innovations in agriculture on a 25,000-square-meter exhibition area.

Lommers’ asparagus harvester is expected to generate significant interest from agronomists, engineers, and farm owners attending the event. With its promise of efficiency, labor cost reduction, and crop quality improvement, the machine symbolizes the future of precision agriculture. In combination with other innovative tools and products to be displayed at expoSE, it underscores the importance of automation in addressing the current challenges facing the agricultural industry.

With its capacity to significantly reduce manual labor and optimize harvesting processes, this innovation is set to reshape asparagus production.
