In the agricultural year 2022/2023, Russia has emerged as the top importer of cherries, peaches, and nectarines from Turkey, surpassing its previous year’s record by purchasing approximately 25,170 tons, according to data from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the United States Department of Agriculture published in August 2023. Russia’s Growing Appetite for Turkish Fruits
The agricultural trade landscape is witnessing a notable shift as Russia strengthens its position as the leading importer of cherries, peaches, and nectarines from Turkey. The latest data from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) reveals that in the 2022/2023 agricultural year, Russia’s imports of these fruits reached a staggering 25,170 tons, compared to 23,120 tons the previous year. This surge in imports signifies a remarkable 40% share of the total export of cherries, peaches, and nectarines from Turkey, which amounted to 57,915 tons for the 2022/2023 agricultural year, compared to 70,948 tons in the preceding year.
Turkey’s Fruit Export Dominance
Turkey has long held a prominent position as one of the world’s largest exporters of stone fruits, annually shipping over 250,000 tons, with a significant portion destined for the European Union and Russia. However, the latest research, published in August 2023, suggests that Turkish exporters are now exploring new avenues for the sale of stone fruits, especially cherries, in the Far East, including South Korea.
In addition to Russia, Germany (15,343 tons) and Iraq (7,813 tons) emerged as key export destinations for Turkish cherries during the 2022/23 season. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s forecasts, Turkey is set to export 200,000 tons of fresh peaches and nectarines in the 2023/24 season, primarily due to a substantial increase in production. The export of fresh peaches and nectarines from Turkey has surged by an impressive 94% compared to the 2019/20 season, reaching 204,211 tons in the 2022/23 season. The transition to modern cultivation methods has significantly improved the quality of Turkish peaches and nectarines, leading to a remarkable growth in exports over the past decade. The major destination countries for Turkish peaches and nectarines in the 2022/23 season are expected to be Russia (153,352 tons), Iraq (14,841 tons), and Syria (6,944 tons).
