Educational Field Trip Highlights Production Struggles and Market Value Issues\
Recent events in Sicily have brought attention to the challenges facing the Pachino PGI tomato, a renowned cherry tomato variety that has become a significant player in both Italian and international markets. The Consorzio di Tutela e Promozione del Pomodoro di Pachino IGP organized an educational field trip to showcase the production and marketing processes of this esteemed product. The event underscored both the successes and difficulties experienced by the industry.
The field trip, organized by the Consorzio delle Denominazioni di Origine Siciliane, included visits to GSG Sipione in Ispica and Proagri’s packaging center. Attendees, including stakeholders, members of the press, and representatives from the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Sicily (IZS), gained insight into the cultivation and marketing stages of Pachino PGI tomatoes.
Massimo Pavan, Vice-President of the Consortium, highlighted severe challenges facing the industry. The ongoing drought conditions are threatening Sicilian horticulture, raising production costs due to increased water pumping expenses and higher prices for inputs like pesticides and fertilizers. Pavan criticized the current market prices, stating that tomatoes were sold below cost for three consecutive months, with production costs estimated at €1.40 per kilogram compared to the market price of €0.40 per kilogram. This discrepancy has led to significant financial strain on producers.
The day’s activities also included a visit to Pro.Agri, where Giovanni Iuvara detailed the logistics, packaging, and transport processes, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the cold chain to preserve product quality.
Sebastiano Fortunato, President of the Consortium, addressed the significance of field trips in educating the public, particularly young people, about the Pachino PGI tomato. He noted that increasing consumer interest in product origins, sustainability, and business ethics is shaping the future of the industry. Fortunato reaffirmed the Consortium’s commitment to promoting the value of Pachino PGI tomatoes and supporting the thousands of Sicilian families involved in its production.
