The topic of storing vegetables often raises questions even among experienced summer residents, since it is possible to lose part of the grown crop due to a small mistake. Which crops cannot be stored together, and which, on the contrary, will become excellent neighbors, said agronomist Peter Lomonosov.
The first thing the expert noticed was the storage of apples. He explained that apples of autumn and winter varieties should be stored separately.
– When ripe, fruits and vegetables release ethylene. It can lead to a loss of crop quality and a reduction in its shelf life. Apples of autumn varieties deteriorate quickly, emit a lot of ethylene. Therefore, they should not be stored in the same basement with apples of winter varieties, even if you put them on different shelves. Joint storage can lead to the fact that winter apples will spoil faster. Therefore, it is better to leave the harvest of autumn varieties, for example, on the balcony,” the agronomist said.
According to him, apples will also become bad neighbors for beets, carrots and onions: root crops will rot much faster with such storage.
– By the way, apples can be used for ripening tomatoes and peppers. There is also a little trick: if you have ornamental plants growing at home that cannot bloom, you can put a vase with ripe apples next to them. Fruits should be changed periodically. But next to the cabbage, they can not be stored in any case because of the risk of damage to gray rot. The fruit will also become a bad neighbor for green crops,” said Peter Lomonosov.
On the web, you can find advice regarding beets: bloggers claim that it is best to store the culture in bulk on the surface of potatoes. The agronomist said that last year he decided to try this method.
– I didn’t like the result very much. Carrots and beets have a fairly thin skin. It is better to store them in bags or in another way that preserves moisture,” the expert shared his opinion.
