The number of poisonings in the Leningrad region increases significantly in the summer. The reason is most often such attractive vegetables and fruits. Toxicologist Mikhail Kutushov told the MK in Peter journalists how to choose safe seasonal products.
The doctor noted that melons, watermelons, bananas, cucumbers, citrus fruits and greens most often cause poor health. The patient’s temperature rises, dizziness begins, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting appear.
Fruits and vegetables become an incredibly attractive environment for the reproduction of microorganisms in the summer, so first of all the products need to be properly stored. For example, it is better to take a watermelon whole. Cut fruits are more likely to develop bacteria.
Nitrates and pesticides that were used to process the crop during ripening can also cause poisoning. Buyers can’t find out about this, so you need to choose at least whole products, without damage.
Be sure to wash both food and hands. Most poisoning occurs in children precisely for this reason. Ideally, it is worth eating vegetables and fruits only after heat treatment.
Greens, cherries and strawberries do not undergo heat treatment, and many people do not even thoroughly wash their food. MK in the Leningrad Region published recommendations of Rospotrebnadzor on how to properly clean vegetables and fruits before use.
