In three correctional institutions of the Kamchatka Territory, they began harvesting cucumbers of the Zozulya, Stella and Courage varieties, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Kamchatka Territory told the KAMCHATKA-INFORM agency.
The total area of greenhouses is more than 1.5 hectares.
The products, first of all, will be directed to the self-sufficiency of the colonies and the pre-trial detention center. Over the summer period, it is planned to collect more than 5.5 tons of cucumbers, which will go to the table for convicts. The surplus will be sold to the public.
“The convicts employed at the greenhouse farm take care of the plants every day, strictly observing the frequency of watering. At the same time, chemical additives are not used to obtain environmentally friendly products. All employees have sanitary books and undergo a mandatory medical examination every morning,” the department stressed.
The Center for Labor Adaptation of Convicts notes that from year to year the harvest of cucumbers is more than is required for the implementation of the self-sufficiency program of the penitentiary system of the region.
“However, there is always a buyer for the surplus: fresh vegetables at quite affordable prices for the Kamchatka Territory are quickly snapped up by employees of the penitentiary system and sold to the population at fairs and through the distribution network,” the UFSIN said.
