In the bustling city of Depok, West Java, urban farming has emerged as a beacon of innovation and sustainability. Amidst the challenges of limited space, a remarkable transformation is underway, spearheaded by dedicated individuals and communities.
One pivotal force behind the success of urban farming in Depok is the active involvement of Agricultural Extension Officers (PPL). With urban dwellers often lacking agricultural knowledge, regular and diverse training sessions have ignited a newfound interest in gardening within confined spaces.
The ERSA Women Farmers Group (KWT ERSA) stands as a shining example of this movement. Comprising nine passionate homemakers with a shared love for farming and environmental advocacy, they’ve reclaimed a public space in their community, transforming it into a productive mini-garden. Initially uncertain about the land’s potential, the group embarked on a journey to create a space that is not only productive but also aesthetically pleasing, serving as a local recreational area. After researching and visiting various urban farming sites in Depok, they decided to convert the 24 m2 plot into a hydroponic and organic vegetable garden.
As harvest time approaches, KWT ERSA anticipates yielding approximately 190 packs of fresh vegetables, including Pak Coy, Kangkung, and Celery. This abundance not only provides the community with access to quality produce but also contributes to food security, especially in terms of vegetable consumption.
The harvested vegetables will be sold to local residents, with a portion allocated to the “Friday Blessings” program in collaboration with the nearby Al-Awwal Mosque. Additionally, proceeds from sales will fund the garden’s operations, covering expenses such as purchasing seeds, hydroponic nutrients, and garden maintenance, with any surplus serving as the group’s reserve funds.
Looking ahead, Mila, the leader of KWT ERSA, envisions further expansion and development of the garden, aiming to establish it as a pilot project for others interested in urban farming.
Located at Jl Kenanga 1, Perumas Depok 1, Kelurahan Depok Jaya, Kecamatan Pancoran Mas, Kota Depok, West Java, the ERSA garden occupies a previously underutilized public space, exemplifying the transformative power of urban agriculture.
