A new project in the field of agriculture in Moldova “to increase competitiveness, sustainability and diversification of markets” will be financed by the World Bank (WB), priority areas for financing were identified on Monday during the final negotiations with representatives of the financial institution, the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture reports.
According to the head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Vladimir Boli, in the context of climate change and lack of water resources, the most important issue is the restoration of primary and secondary irrigation infrastructure, the expansion of irrigated agricultural land and the transfer of knowledge about technologies and methods for saving water.
“Resilience to climate change can be increased through the modernization of agriculture by restoring irrigation systems. We want the investments invested in the new project to be long-term in order to subsequently increase the possibility of producing valuable crops for export,” said Vladimir Bolya.
In addition, the project includes funding for the modernization of the food safety system, the establishment of a register of farmers and the development of value chains.
The estimated cost of the project is US$55 million.
