Mighirian Frères Highlights Challenges Faced by Tomato Market This Year
The tomato season has yet to properly commence, as inclement weather continues to hinder demand. “In order to sell tomatoes, we need nice weather. It is not a question of sorting, origin, or production. When the weather is nice and warm, we eat light and consume more tomatoes. However, the summer weather has not arrived yet,” explains Cédric Leite of Mighirian Frères, a company based at Rungis. Like many professionals in the sector, he deplores the lack of consistent summer weather. “It is nice for one day, and then it rains for two days. Tomatoes with mozzarella is a summer dish, and as long as people cannot eat outside, we do not sell. We need at least 3 days of fine weather in a row to properly start the season.”
Potentially Missed Season
This year, the tomato season risks ending before it even begins. “We usually launch in April, and consumption explodes in May. We are selling tomatoes, of course, but we are already in July and consumption has not peaked yet. Consumption usually does not take off during the summer holidays, so we could miss the tomato season entirely this year,” Leite laments.
Production and Market Dynamics
In terms of production, the lack of sunshine has resulted in limited supply, but products are still available. “We are not overwhelmed by products in storage, but we do feel that the market is pulling a little,” Leite notes. Despite the challenges, Mighirian Frères continues to navigate the market conditions, striving to meet the demands as they arise.
