Tuva, a region known for its arid climate, is receiving a significant boost in funding for land reclamation and irrigation expansion. The Russian government, under Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin’s directive, has allocated over 8 million rubles in additional subsidies to enhance irrigated agricultural lands in Tuva. This investment is set to rejuvenate over 714 hectares of abandoned lands, ultimately contributing to the region’s agricultural sustainability.
Agriculture in Tuva has long been challenged by its dry climate, making irrigation a critical component of the local farming landscape. Recent developments, however, are promising for the agricultural sector in this Russian region. Tuva has secured additional subsidies exceeding 8 million rubles, sanctioned by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, to further its land reclamation and irrigation expansion efforts. This substantial funding injection is part of a broader initiative aimed at bolstering the region’s agricultural potential.
As of now, Tuva has earmarked a total of 16.3 million rubles to be invested in the restoration and construction of irrigation systems by the end of 2023. This financial commitment will facilitate the completion of three key projects slated for 2023, covering a combined area of 714 hectares in the Pi-Khemsky and Chaa-Kholsky districts. The projects encompass a range of activities, from the reconstruction of the “Malinovskaya” irrigation system to the revitalization of abandoned lands. This includes clearing lands of bushes and weeds, leveling and plowing, and soil cultivation to prepare them for agricultural use.
The significance of this investment cannot be overstated, particularly given Tuva’s climate conditions, where the viability of crop cultivation largely depends on access to irrigated lands. Recognizing this, Vladislav Khovalyg, the Head of the Republic of Tuva, has made expanding irrigated areas a top priority for the region.
Over the past few years, Tuva has made substantial progress in restoring its irrigation systems. The irrigated land area has increased from a modest 9 thousand hectares to a more promising 17 thousand hectares. This growth signifies a positive trajectory for agriculture in Tuva, as it translates into increased crop yields and agricultural output.
Looking ahead, the efforts to bring irrigated lands back into productive use will continue into 2024. Currently, four additional land reclamation projects with a combined capacity of over 1 thousand hectares are undergoing expert evaluations. The federal budget has allocated 10.2 million rubles for Tuva in the next year, specifically for these endeavors, highlighting the government’s commitment to the region’s agricultural development.
Tuva’s receipt of additional subsidies for expanding its irrigated lands is a significant step toward transforming the region’s agricultural landscape. With a focus on efficient land reclamation and irrigation system development, Tuva is poised to enhance its agricultural output, ensuring food security for its residents and contributing to the broader agricultural sector in Russia.
