Insights from Hermann Felber, Leading Vegetable Wholesaler
Schrobenhausen, known for its premium asparagus, faced an abrupt conclusion to its season this year due to adverse weather conditions. Heavy rains and storms swept through the southern German region, prompting some growers to prematurely end their harvest. Hermann Felber, a prominent vegetable wholesaler at the Munich wholesale market, notes the repercussions on the market dynamics, particularly on asparagus prices and availability.
“The recent storms have significantly impacted the regional asparagus season,” explains Felber. “Several suppliers from Schrobenhausen have already ceased production earlier than usual, leading to a tightening of supply and subsequent price increases during week 23.” He further comments on the quality decline observed in asparagus from Schrobenhausen, highlighting a shift towards sourcing from Lower Bavaria and the Palatinate regions to meet market demands.
Beyond asparagus, Felber manages the procurement and distribution of open-field vegetables and salads sourced from various southern German regions. “Our focus has diversified to include salads from regions like Allgäu, Lower Bavaria, and Regensburg,” he adds. Transitioning seamlessly from imported produce to regional offerings, Felber underscores the market’s adaptability amidst changing supply dynamics.
With four decades of experience at the Munich wholesale market and as the second-generation manager of Felber Company since 2001, Hermann Felber reflects on recent market trends. “While the pandemic initially boosted demand from weekly market traders and specialty stores, recent trends show a shift towards cost-saving behaviors,” Felber observes. This trend has redirected consumer spending towards discount retailers, impacting traditional market channels and leading to closures among some market traders due to succession challenges.
As the industry navigates these shifts, Felber remains committed to adapting strategies to meet evolving consumer preferences and market conditions, ensuring consistent supply and quality across their product range.
