In a visionary move, Yakutia is set to revolutionize its agricultural landscape by creating a republican breeding and seed center and an agrobiotechnopark. The agricultural development program for 2024–2027, recently approved by Yakutia’s Project Office under the “Agriculture” direction, emphasizes the pivotal role of these initiatives.
According to Artem Alexandrov, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Policy of the Republic, the program envisions three main directions, with a particular emphasis on seed production for the local seed system. Over the past years, the Ministry has entered into 21 contracts for the implementation of scientific developments, collaborating with institutions like the Yakutsk Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture and the Arctic State Agrotechnological University.
The implementation of the new program is contingent on financial support, with plans for initiation as early as 2025. One of the primary goals is to enhance seed breeding for local agricultural crops, aligning with the vision set by Yakutia’s head, Aisen Nikolaev.
The establishment of agrobiotechnoparks in Yakutia falls under the purview of the Yakutsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, specifically the Yakutsk Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture. The institute’s acting director, Mikhail Cherosov, revealed ongoing collaborations with the Novosibirsk Scientific Center for joint efforts in this direction. The Russian government had initiated a program to support agrobiotechnoparks last summer.
Yakutia’s strategic focus on advanced seed science and agrobiotechnology signals a transformative era for the region’s agriculture.
